Putin: Space Industry Needs to Be Modernized, All Production and Bases Moved to Russia

Russia should have independent access to space from its territory. And the number of launches from Vostochny Cosmodrome should increase in the near future. Russia should have independent access to space from its territory. And the number of launches from Vostochny Cosmodrome should increase in the near future. Today, that's what Vladimir Putin talked about at the extended meeting of the Security Council. The President stressed that there isn't a single company that wants to finish Vostochny Cosmodrome.

Dmitry Petrov has the details.

Russian cosmonautics needs a new impulse and deep modernization. The issue is so important that the President raised it at the extended meeting of the Security Council in which the government participated. Many of the decisions made in the Kremlin today will define the strategy for space exploration for several years or probably decades to come.

Of course, successes and achievements of previous years should be the basis on which the future of the Russian cosmonautics will be built.

Vladimir Putin: "It's a unique venture but, of course, it needs to be constantly strengthened. It's clear that the space industry needs to be deeply modernized. We need to introduce modern management models to the enterprises, R&D, learn how to use the results of space exploration activities more efficiently in every area of our lives. If we go around in circles or constantly talk about our previous achievements, it'll be impossible to catch up".

Putin stressed that it's time to complete the reorganization of Roscosmos, proceed to systematic work to achieve results, consistently solve the obvious problems that impede the development of the space industry.

Vladimir Putin: "Price and time parameters used in the preparation of projects aren't properly justified. As a result, the planned deadlines are delayed and the budget expenditures increase. How many times has it happened in recent years?"

This is also the case for the construction of Vostochny Cosmodrome. They fail to complete its second stage. The government should pay attention to the financial aspect of the project.

Vladimir Putin: "It's been reported repeatedly that no company will undertake the completion because of those prices. We need to be more realistic about it. We need a justified approach without exorbitant prices, of course, but we need to be realistic. I reiterate that we should have independent access to space from Russian territory. In the near future, there should be more launches from Vostochny Cosmodrome".

To be exact, in 2021, the Angara A5 heavy-lift launch vehicle is to be launched from Vostochny Cosmodrome. And in 2025, its modification A5M which can lift even more cargo is to be launched. The government is to consider the suggestions and present the renewed program for the President for approval on July 15th.

Yury Borisov, Deputy Prime Minister: "We paid attention to the issue of the commercialization of the space industry. Our presence in the market of space services is unacceptably small. We paid attention to the wide implementation of digital technology".

Nikolai Patrushev, Security Council Secretary: "We should rely on ourselves more and continue international cooperation where it's possible. You know that in conditions of sanctions, we should make a number of necessary things ourselves".

The global market of space services is estimated at over $180 billion per year. And it'll only grow.
