The Russian embassy in the USA has sent a note to the State Department demanding to stop the moral coercion of detained Russian Maria Butina, according to the diplomatic mission's Facebook (запрещена в РФ) page.

Russian diplomats visited Butina in a US prison. They noted she is abused on a daily basis and housed in adverse conditions. She doesn't get any medical care, she's kept awake at night, and she's observed all the time. Also, Maria is being deprived of yard time and receiving letters in Russian. I'd like to remind you that she was indicted for alleged conspiracy and work as a foreign agent.

"Violating all humanitarian norms, Maria isn't being allowed to receive letters in Russian under the ridiculous pretext of them being possible cipher messages, when in fact, the management just doesn't want to bother looking for a translator. Medical aid isn't being delivered properly. Hypostasis, which has gotten progressively worse, has appeared on her leg due to her cold cell. Instead of treatment, Maria receives painkillers. She has started limping. Facilitated by the US authorities, the creation of such conditions for the detention of one of our citizens, who is just a suspect and was never convicted, is unacceptable".
